Katyusha Pilot 1 in development
The Katyusha BM-13N
Using a variety of platforms, including US trucks purchased
through the Lend Lease scheme, the Russian army's Katyusha was
an unsophisticated, yet deadly weapon, that struck terror into
German troops on the Eastern Front. The Multi-Launch Rocket
System (MLRS) was devised to deliver a huge physical and
psychological impact upon the enemy at a fraction of the cost of
manufacturing an artillery gun. Development began in 1938 with
the Katyusha making its debut in July 1941 against German troops
near the river Berezina. The weapon was kept secret and referred
to simply by the designation "K" after the Kostikov gun factory
where it was initially manufactured. Red Army soldiers nicknamed
the weapon "Katyusha" from the patrionic song by Isakovsky,
which roughly translates as the girl's name Katie.
The Katyusha could strike large areas with devastating effect at
ranges of 5,500m. A battery of four BM-13 launchers could
deliver 4.35 tons of high explosive over an area equivalent to
50 football pitches. An impact equivalent to 72 artillery
pieces. In addition the screaming noises made by the rockets
could shake the confidence of even the most battle-hardened
veteran. This, combined with the look of the launcher, led to
the German's sardonically referring to this new terror as
"Stalin's Organ".
By the end of hostilities over 10,000 Katyusha launchers had
been produced along with 12 million rockets.
The 1/6th Scale Model.......
Our model of the Katyusha BM-13N has been in development for 15
months. Our pre-production pilot model is expected in October.
We will publish pictures of this stunning model as soon as they
are available.
The Katyusha BM-13N model is more than just a great RC truck.
The 16 missiles are designed for commercially available 18mm
solid rocket motors which can be ignited sequentially by remote
control. The missiles will fire up to 100m.
Obviously you should act responsibly within the guidelines
contained in the United Kingdom Rocketry Association (UKRA) code
of practice for the safe use of this equipment. The model is
built primarily of brass and aluminium with rubber tyres. Your
model comes complete with a full complement of 16 rockets. The
launcher can be set at various levels, but you should note the
model rocketry code of practice advises, for safety, the
elevation should be at a minimum of 60 degrees from the
horizontal. Your model is provided fully assembled and painted.
It is well detailed, but leaves the military enthusiast the
opportunity to add additional fine scale details to create a
unique model. At 1/6th scale it is the perfect addition to your
Red Army 12" figure collection, or T34!
If you are looking for something a little different from heavy
armour the Katyusha offers an unusual, but compelling, subject
that combines dynamic excitement at a great value for money
price. The model will be the subject of a single batch
production in 2019 and will then not be offered again until 2021
at the very earliest.
We are in the process of preparing the build of a batch of up to
100 models for delivery July/August 2019.
As testament to our confidence in the models we supply we offer
a full 12 months warranty on every product.
